Help us test a new stop smoking program!
We are looking for people to take part in a study to test a new stop smoking program.
This study will compare two stop smoking programs.
Both programs are delivered by telephone quit coaches who have lots of training and experience to help you stop smoking.
Working with a quit coach is a little bit like making a movie. You are the actor, and your coach is the director. You both have special talents, experience and training. You work together to create a script, and then the director guides you how to act out your script to make your movie. When you work with a quit coach, stopping smoking is the happy ending!
Program 1 uses guided imagery. Your coach will work with you to use imagery, which is a form of visualization that's proven to help you make positive changes. Guided imagery uses your mind to help you practice strategies to stop smoking and to see yourself as smoke-free. It is not hypnosis.
Program 2 uses behavioral strategies. Your coach will work with you to create a plan with commonly used and standard techniques to help you stop smoking.
You will get 6 coaching sessions over the phone, and up to 4 weeks of nicotine patches or nicotine lozenges.
There is no cost to you.
You will receive $50 in electronic gift (e-gift) cards or checks for participating in the study.
$10 e-gift card or check for completing the enrollment survey over the phone
$15 e-gift card or check for completing the first follow-up survey 8 weeks after enrollment
$25 e-gift card or check for completing the second follow-up survey 6 months after enrollment
To participate in this University of Arizona research study, you must be:
- 18 or older
- Able to speak English
- A current smoker who is ready to quit
- Willing to be randomly assigned (50-50 chance) to the guided imagery program or the behavioral strategies program
Your information will be kept completely confidential.
